Prologue.

HELP!
Some really weird things have been going on in Santa’s Workshop this year, and there’s nothing we can do about it. We don’t have much strength left. I don’t know how much longer we can hold on. I can’t even think about what will happen to Christmas this year!
Take this part of the magic key. It will help you find the hidden door in the Gift Shop. You’ll find Santa’s Workshop on the other side.
Please hurry. You’re our only hope!
Gold Danny, Christmas Elf

・have been going on:(主語)が行われている、続いている

《 Hidden Door(隠されていた扉)》

Santa’s Workshop? Does it even exist? The home of jolly old Saint Nick, the place where Santa and his little elf helpers make presents for people all over the world. I always thought it was nothing but a fairy tale. But we just got a letter saying that Santa’s Workshop is real. And on top of that, there’s a door leading to Santa’s Workshop right here, inside the Gift Shop. The elf enclosed the first part of a key in his letter. When I picked it up, a barely discernible silhouette of a door appeared of the far wall of the Gift Shop. Come on, let’s find the remaining parts of the key and take a look at Santa’s legendary Workshop!

・on top of that:それに加えて、その上

Find the pieces of the mirror key.

We’ve collected all the pieces of the key! I’m on the edge of my seat. I can’t wait to get inside! Or didn’t you spend your whole childhood dreaming about seeing Santa’s Workshop with your own two eyes?

Now that we’ve collected all the pieces of the key, I can clearly see the door on the far wall of the Gift Shop. The scent of oranges and pine tree branches is wafting out of it, and I can faintly make out the sound of jingling bells… There’s no doubt about it – this door leads to Santa’s Workshop. Well, what are you waiting for? Go ahead and open it!

Just the sound of the door to Santa’s Workshop squeaking open fills me with the expectation of magic! Go on, take a step forward and enter the magical world of Christmas!

《 Open Sesame!(開け、ごま!)》

We‘re about to enter Santa’s Workshop. This is one of the most exciting moments of my life! But we didn’t come here to gawk, we need to figure out why the letters asking for Christmas presents aren’t making it to Santa Claus.

最終文の we need to why the letters asking for Christmas presents aren’t making it to Santa Claus.

The crystal jingling of bells, the scent of fresh pine tree branches and oranges fills the room under the carved, timbered arches. Without a doubt, the spirit of Christmas resides here..

Wow, everything in Santa’s Workshop is covered in dust, and it’s as empty and cold as the AntarcticaHow can this be? Christmas is mere days away. This place should be filled with busy, hard-working little elves scurrying around the Workshop, wrapping presents, running down the list of gift recipients, and helping Santa Claus in whatever way they can.
But what do we have here? The Workshop is empty, and everything is covered in hoarfrost! Who’s going to make the presents? Don’t tell me I’m not getting a present this Christmas!

・How can this be?:そんなわけないでしょ?、どうしてそうなる?

Start an investigation. Open the Diary.

One Christmas legend turned out to be true. The secret door opened into Santa’s Workshop. But what is it? Inside it’s empty and quiet, the conveyor belt for wrapping gifts is broken. It seems like the magic of Christmas has abandoned this place. Where are the elves and Santa himself? Uncover the secret agenda of those who pose a threat to Christmas.

Chapter1:Santa’s Workshop looks abandoned and the conveyor belt for gifts has been broken for a long time. The floor is strewn with letters from citizens and boxes containing gifts. Search them to find out what happened here.
MISSION:Explore Santa’s Workshop.

・be strewn with A:Aが一面に散らばる、撒き散らされる

Why is there nobody in Santa’s Workshop and what will happen to the holiday preparations? Will everyone be left without gifts? Where did Santa Claus go? To have a Merry Christmas, we need to make sense of all this, and quickly.

OK.

Okay, let’s recap. First the letters to Santa stopped disappearing from the front door of the Gift Shop. Then we got the elf’s request for help, and now we’re in Santa’s Workshop!
Take a look around. Where is all the magic that we’ve heard about in the stories of Santa’s Workshop? Where is the warmth and joy? Why is the conveyor belt not running, and why isn’t it filled with gifts to be wrapped? Why aren’t the little elves running to and fro, tying colorful bows around boxes of presents? It’s almost as if the magic of Christmas has abandoned this place. Everything is covered in dust and cobwebs instead of streamers and strings of lights. Something has disturbed the usual Christmas preparations. How could Santa let this happen? And where is he, anyway?

・recap=recapitulate:要約する、繰り返す
・instead of A:Aの代わりに、Aどころか

冒頭の stopped disappearing from the front door of the Gift Shop.

His rocking chair is empty.

We still don’t have a single clue that might help us figure out what happened in Santa’s Workshop. Judging from what we’ve seen, preparations were actively underway, but then all a sudden everything stopped. Where should we begin? I’m not the Detective of course, but look – the entire floor of the Workshop is littered with letters from the people of the City. These are the letters Santa managed to get. Maybe they contain a clue.

・all (of) a sudden:不意に、急に
・be littered with A:Aで満ちている、Aでいっぱいである

That could work.

主人公のセリフ “That could work.”

《 An Unexpected Find(思いがけない発見)》

Here’s the first letter… What a coincidence, it’s from me! Here’s what I wrote to Santa:
“Dear Santa,
I was really, really good this year. I tried to be nice and to help everybody, but this is tough to do in the City of Shadows! So I was a goody-two-shoe all year long. Do you think you could bring me a nice pair of earrings for Christmas? Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas!”
That was fun, but where’s the box with my present? Find it.

・What a coincidence!:

《 Adding to the Arsenal(武器の足しになるもの)》

Here’s my letter to Santa. I recognise it thanks to the special flourish of the pen on the envelope. Okay, everything seems fine – I asked for a special dagger with a silver blade for hunting werewolves. I wonder if he finished it… Look for the dagger among the gifts.

・thanks to A:Aのおかげで

《 Alas and Alack…(ああ、悲しきかな…)》

Hey, buddy, I heard you’re searching Santa’s Workshop for letters asking for presents, right? Well, I gave old Saint Nick mine. I asked Santa for a bottle of the good stuff, a 25-year vintage. So what? It’s the holidays, you’re supposed to spoil yourself! That stuff would really hit the spot right now. Find my drink.

・give it a try:運試しをする、やってみる

《 A Hole for a Dandy(お洒落さんの穴ぼこ)》

The Detective might be a good-looking guy, but he’s such a nerd! This is the umpteenth Christmas he’s asked Santa for some kind of hat. Does he collect them or something? This year he asked for a Trilby Hat made of brown felt. Let’s try to find his hat.

《 Phony Gemstones(マガイモノの宝石)》

Yes, my friend! Even I, an expert at winning the rarest items, writes a letter to Santa every year. I have ever since I was little! This year I asked Santa to give me a valuable accessory: a box for my magical deck of cards, encrusted with rubies and emeralds. Help me find this valuable case.

What a disaster! I was looking forward to getting that box, but the lid’s broken, and the gemstones it’s decorated with aren’t real, they’re just glass! I demand material compensation for this! We need to figure out who took it upon themselves to ruin Christmas.

Every box we’ve looked inside had a present in it, but they’ve all been completely ruined: broken earrings, a rusty dagger, a sour drink, a hat with a hole in it, and a broken box.
We’ve only opened a few presents, but I’m confident that all the other boxes contain useless, broken junk rather than shiny, brand-new gifts. This means that the magical conveyor belt has been wrapping up trash instead of people’s long-awaited presents. Can you imagine what will happen when people open these presents on Christmas day?

A Sad Future.

《 Wicked Beauty(悪意に満ちたもの)》

The magical conveyor belt used to wrap presents but its malfunctioning and filled Santa’s Workshop with boxes full of ruined presents.
But why did the conveyor belt break, and why did it keep wrapping up broken bits and obvious junk instead? How could Santa have let this happen?
There must be magic mixed up in all this. Somewhere in the Workshop I can sense a present infused with an aura of black magic that is alien to Christmas. Who was supposed to get this gift? I need artifacts from the City to find the present with the evil aura.

HELP!
Dear Santa,
I hope that you’re above the petty squabbles that came between us last year.
You are a great magician, and your elves also know a thing or two about magical items. But will you be up to the task of making me the special Christmas present I have in mind? In order to make your little helpers’ job easier, I will describe in detail how to make it.
Thank you, Santa!
Merry Christmas, and a frosty New Year!
The Snow Queen

A gift for the Snow Queen? Hmm, I never would’ve guessed that the queen of the Land of Ice, a woman who detests the warmth of Christmas, would write a letter to Santa Claus asking for Christmas presents. Could this be a sudden attack of sentimentality or regret for everything she’s done? I’d like to believe that anyone can change, but I’ve got a bad feeling about this. Something tells me the Snow Queen is involved in the disaster at Santa’s Workshop.

That sounds very likely.

MISSION:Ask the Christmas elves.

《 Hey, over here!(ほら、こっちだよ!)》

I’m still not certain that the problems at Santa’s Workshop, and the broken conveyor belt, are the work of the Snow Queen… but we can’t save Christmas without Santa Claus. Where has that kindly old soul wandered off to? It looks like he just stepped out for a minute, but based on the layer of dust, he’s been gone for a long time.
Remember how the elves, Santa’s helpers, asked us for help? They must know where he is. Let’s try to find one of the elves.

《 Familiar Faces(馴染みの顔)》

Apparently Santa Claus was getting ready to step out and left some work for his elves to do. Happy Willy is an old friend of ours after last Christmas’s epic prank. 《 A Trek Through the Stars(星の合間を通りゆく旅路)》

It’s crystal clear that the Christmas preparations aren’t going well. Santa’s Workshop is full of boxes containing broken toys, dust and ruined gifts. Are people really going to get this junk instead of their long-awaited Christmas presents? In order to save Christmas, we’re going to have to get the elves to tell us where Santa Claus has gone. We did it! The elves are gradually regaining consciousness. Look, there’s something shiny in Steel Ricky’s hands! It looks like a map of the heavens -diamond-like stars appear to be floating in the air and they’re all linked together in a chain with a piece of golden thread. Unfortunately, the little elves are still silent. What are we going to do? Hey, they wrote a note! Let me see it.

Yikes… what’s the date today? Jingle my bells, it’s almost Christmas! We overslept! Pretty soon our preparations for Christmas will be completely ruined. A few weeks ago Santa Claus flew to Lapland. He usually does this when we’re getting close to Christmas. Right after he took off a bitter cold blew through the Workshop… not just cold, but ice magic. First the present-wrapping conveyor belt broke. It kept working, but it started wrapping up broken toys and ruined things instead of packing shiny, new presents. We tried to stop it but nothing worked… and then the cold got so bad that we fell asleep until you woke us up.
Why hasn’t Santa come back yet? There must be something preventing him from making the return trip to the Workshop.

According to the elves, Santa Claus set out on an ordinary trip and hasn’t come back. His little helpers told us about the special navigational devices and beacons Santa uses to plot his trips among the stars. Thanks to them, he can always find the way home.
But what if the navigational system has been disabled and Santa doesn’t know how to get back to the City of Shadows? The only way to know for sure is to learn more about Santa’s magical devices. Not many people know about them.

Chapter3:The elves said that Santa took off on his usual trip on the reindeer sleigh, but he never returned. Someone or something knocked out the navigational system that guides Santa back to the Workshop. But what does Santa’s navigational system look like? Learn more about what kind of device it is.

《 Heavenly Rings(天空の輪っか)》

In order for Christmas to be saved, Santa Claus has to find the way back to the City of Shadows. We need to learn as much as we can about Santa’s navigational devices and beacons and figure out how they work. Start by searching the Workshop for the Astrolabe. This item is made up of a system of heavenly rings, one of which has our planet on it.

Wow, is that really Santa’s Astral Sextant? It’s a pretty complex instrument… I’d never be able to figure out how to use it on the go. Okay, we’ve got two of the devices from his navigational system. If we find the others, Santa will be able to find the City of Shadows and bring Christmas to every home.

《 Counting the Seconds(秒読み)》

・It won’t be long before:間も無く~だろう

《 Icy Shackles(氷の拘束具)》

You’ve found all the navigational devices Santa Claus uses to plot his routes among the stars as he travels to various countries and time periods.
The elves mentioned a beacon in the Workshop that Santa uses to find the way to his house in the City of Shadows. But what does it look like?
Combine all five magical devices. Hopefully we can use them with artifacts from the City to point the way to this beacon, which is the navigational system’s primary component. It’s exactly what we need to get Santa back.

This is real magic! Who could’ve imagined that the beacon would be a frozen Globe of Wishes. According to legend, Santa can see everybody who has made a Christmas wish within it. He can even look inside the homes of each and every person. Look, the magical globe is completely covered in ice! No wonder we didn’t pay any attention to it earlier. Once again we’ve found traces of ice magic in Santa’s Workshop.

Christmas is coming yet again, and all the warmth from people’s hearts, and all their kindness is melting my kingdom. Even the walls of my castle are starting to drip… it’s unbearable!
My fruitless attempts to destroy this holiday will not stop me. The Snow Queen’s determination is as hard as a diamond.
Santa Claus has become more careful and hidden himself away in his home in the City of Shadows, which I hadn’t been able to find. I was aided by a brilliant idea: send Santa a letter asking for a gift. The little elves assembled the item based on my sketches, and, like a beacon, the gift showed me where to find Santa.
I observed the Workshop for a long time until I was finally prepared. I learned about the navigational system and the magical globe beacon Santa uses to find his home. I couldn’t strike while Santa was in his Workshop… so I found an ingenious way to get rid of him. When Santa flew away, I cast an ice curse on the magical globe. The globe was unable to transmit a signal from beneath the ice. Now Santa Claus is wandering from world to world and time to time, unable to find his way home.
Once I was certain that Santa wasn’t coming back, knew I had my chance. I altered the settings on the present-wrapping conveyor belt. This year everyone will get nothing but broken gifts and junk for their presents. If this doesn’t kill Christmas, it will at least profoundly shake people’s faith in its magic.

Our suspicions have been confirmed. Everything that’s happened in Santa’s Workshop is the work of the Snow Queen. She used a letter to Santa, asking for a gift to discover the location of the Workshop. She waited for Santa to take a trip in his magical sleigh, then cast an ice curse on it. There’s a reason he can’t find his way back to the Workshop. The Snow Queen took advantage of his absence and took over changing the settings on the present-wrapping line and froze Santa’s elves. It’s no wonder our citizen’s letters to Santa stopped disappearing from the Gift Shop’s front door. Poor Santa is now flying in circles, from country to country and time to time. He has no way to get back to the Workshop without his beacon.

MISSION:Light the Christmas Fire on Santa’s Christmas tree.

《 The Magical Ornament(不思議な装飾)》

As long as the Globe of Wishes is frozen with ice magic, Santa has no hope of finding his Workshop and coming home. We need to find a way to break the Snow Queen’s ice curse. But how?
Do you remember last year, on Christmas Eve, when we defeated the Snow Queen with the Christmas Fire? Now that’s an idea! Santa’s Christmas tree is in the corner, but how can we light the Christmas Fire? I saw a beautiful Christmas tree ornament with a candy cane inside. There was something resembling instructions next to it. Please look for the Christmas tree ornament.

Wow, it’s a snow globe with a candy cane inside! Looking at it makes me feel like a kid again. Such simple sweetness, and so much joy… Children really need so little! Hang the ball on the Christmas tree. Here are Santa’s instructions, what do they say?

“Dear little elf helpers,
I’m leaving you instructions for awakening the Christmas Fire this year. You’ll need to decorate the Christmas tree in the Workshop. However, don’t just decorate it with regular ornaments. I’ve left you five Christmas tree baubles, each of which contains one of my favourite Christmas memories.
Be careful not to break them – the baubles are filled with boundless sources of joy. Do the best you can. You’ll have to make this the most beautiful Christmas tree possible. Once you’ve decorated the tree with the baubles, the warmth and belief in miracles contained within will awaken the Christmas Fire.
I put my faith in you, my little elf friends.
Sincerely, Santa Claus”

《 Trimming the Tree(ツリーの飾り)》

It’s a good thing Santa left detailed instructions on how to awaken the Christmas Fire. Its warmth will break the ice curse the Snow Queen cast on the Globe of Wishes. The beacon will activate, Santa will be able to use its signal to return to the Workshop and Christmas will be saved.
The letter contains drawings of five magical Christmas baubles. Judging from the drawing, we’ve found the first one, which has a candy cane inside it. Now we just need to find the other four. The picture shows another ball containing a funny looking hat with a pompom on it. I remember getting a hat like that for Christmas when I was a kid. 《 Christmas Stories(クリスマスの物語)》

The next Christmas bauble with Santa’s memories has a book in it. That’s not surprising. Santa Claus drew a doll inside the fourth bauble. Oh, mon ami, how I used to dream of getting such a pretty doll when I was little – one with a porcelain face and hands, and wearing an elegant dress! 《 Burning Bright(燃えさかる輝き)》

The five baubles with Santa’s memories are hanging on the Christmas tree. Warmth and the belief in miracles will help light the Christmas Fire and melt the ice covering the globe. Then the beacon will begin emitting magical signals so Santa can find his way back to his Workshop.

Chapter5.

HiddenCity open the Diary

Chapter5:The beacon is free of ice, but the Snow Queen’s spell destroyed the coordinate runes necessary for it to work properly. We must collect spare runes in Santa’s Workshop, calibrate the beacon, and send a signal that will lead Santa Claus to the City of Shadows.
MISSION:Calibrate Santa’s Beacon.

Long ago, while sitting in the library of the School of Young Witches, I did some research on Christmas magic. One chapter was dedicated to the Globe of Wishes. It described coordinate runes that the Globe of Wishes uses to calibrate itself in time and space.
I’m guessing the Snow Queen not only cast an ice curse on the beacon, but also destroyed the runes in order to make it nearly impossible for Santa to return. Without the runes, the Globe is just a pretty toy.
The elves hinted that somewhere in Santa’s Workshop there must be backup coordinate runes. We need to find them and set them in the slots on the magical globe. Then the beacon will activate and show Santa the way to the City of Shadows.

Let’s do it!

《 Cold Fire(冷たい焰)》

In order for the beacon to activate and show Santa the way to the City of Shadows, we need to set coordinate runes into the magical globe. According to the elves, Santa’s Workshop should have back-up runes in it somewhere. Let’s start by finding the Rune of the North.

Wow, the Rune of the North is so beautiful! It shines like a star in the clear night sky. I’d love to make a necklace of runes just like it. I’d even outshine the Mistress and her diamonds!

《 Elegant Components(優美な部品)》

I’ve looked over the diagram of the magical globe. The next rune is the Rune of the South, which has a letter S on one side. We need five coordinate runes. There’s no time to waste. Find the Rune of the South right away!

I never would’ve thought the runes could be so… unusual. I guess I was expecting something like a mechanism. You know, something with screws, and cogwheels,. Oh well, set the Rune of the South in the globe. It’s time to find the other ones. Christmas is right around the corner!

・right around the corner:すぐそこに

《 Magical Components(不思議な部品)》

The combined signal from all five runes will definitely reach Santa wherever he might be.

《 Precious Ice(貴重な氷)》

What do you think, my dear, are the runes very valuable? They’re as beautiful as precious gems. Could they be made from sapphires? No? Too bad… the poor Cardsharp certainly wouldn’t mind a few precious gems. By the way, I saw the Rune of the East in the Workshop. Be a dear and fetch it.

Hey, buddy! Can you give us a hand with our search? I think the last ice rune we need, the Prime Meridian Rune, can be found in the far corner of the Workshop. I noticed a blueish glow coming from over there. Once you find it we’ll finally be able to activate Santa’s magical beacon.

We’re just a step away from fixing the beacon and getting Santa back to the City of Shadows. Set all five runes into the magical globe. It’ll take a lot of magical energy to calibrate the globe. “Dear little elf helpers,
Dear friends,
The Snow Queen’s spells have been a harsh trial for us all. But it wouldn’t be Christmas if good didn’t defeat evil and miracles didn’t happen for all to see! The Magical Globe was activated, and the Guiding Star lit up the sky. It showed me the way when I was lost above the endless expanses of Lapland. The star led me to the City of Shadows, and now we will have the best Christmas ever!
Thank you, my friends!
You saved the elves from the ice curse. The present-wrapping conveyor belt was fixed, and I still have time to make the most wonderful Christmas presents for everyone.
Never forget that the happiness and joy the people of the City will experience this Christmas are all thanks to you!
May all your dreams come true in the new year!
Merry Christmas!
Sincerely, Santa Claus

Thanks to your investigation, the Snow Queen’s nefarious plans have been thwarted yet again. The magic beacon, part of Santa Claus’s marvellous navigation system, is working again. A bright beam hits the sky, lighting the guiding star in the heavens. The star’s light is the orientation point that Santa uses to return to the City of Shadows!
Santa and the elves have a lot of work to do to fix the conveyor belt, prepare these gifts and for the holiday itself.
Without a doubt, Christmas will now take place!
INVESTIGATION COMPLETED

Epilogue. 『

There’s very little time left before Christmas. And as for the gifts, there’s still so much to do! Santa and the elves are using all their Christmas magic right now and will work tirelessly.
But we can help them. Look, I thought of something. The gift conveyor belt will run much faster if an extra motor is connected to it.

Good idea

《 Christmas Magic(クリスマスの魔法)》

A steam engine in the winter is a good thing: it runs and heats at the same time. So, it’s decided! Let’s put a steam engine in Santa’s Workshop to speed up the gift conveyor belt. Though I assembled it myself, it requires a little magic from you to work properly. Find what we need in the City.

Wonderful! Look at how fast the gift conveyor belt runs now! The steam engine is huffing and puffing, toiling and warming Santa’s Workshop. After her snowy tricks, her iciness cannot stop it from warming up. Icy beauties are gorgeous, but you won’t last long near them.

to be continued…
