Thank you for inviting me. I have to admit that this is my first time in the Room of Fate. Martha has always been very wary of me and the phenomenal study – what people of the City call “anomalies” or “effects.” Why is the medium so distrustful of me, you ask? We’ve gone half a century without clearing the air on that subject. Maybe it’s competition. Or maybe Martha thinks that I’m the reason for the appearance of the anomalies that plague her from time to time. However, none of what’s happening in the Room of Fate has anything to do with anomalies. Martha is sitting in an armchair like a doll with a vacant expression on her face, and other people’s voices are coming out of her mouth. One minute she’s mumbling something in a woman’s voice, the next she’s shouting furiously in a man’s voice, and a few seconds later she’s babbling like a child. It’s like she’s possessed! The furniture is moving and strange figures are reflected in the mirror… I’ve never seen anything like this before! So, you want to know what happened here?

Sure.

After correlating the facts, I can tell you that Martha performed some kind of ritual in here. It was no ordinary séance, but something more complex and dangerous. Take another look at our medium – the ghosts that have gathered in the Room of Fate are freely entering and exiting Martha’s body. This is only possible if there is no soul in the body. The medium sitting at this table is just a shell, an empty vessel. While travelling to the astral plane, Martha’s soul encountered something or someone so powerful that they were able to snap the thread connecting the medium’s soul to her body Once it lost its connection, Martha’s soul began wanderingon the astral plane, where directions and dimensions are without end. Without our help, Martha’s soul will remain in the spirit realm forever, and her soulless body will quickly perish. Take the medium’s hand – her pulse is growing weaker by the minute.

Darn it! What shall we do?

That’s some profession Martha has! I wouldn’t like it if one of my cases, even the most dangerous one, knocked my soul out of my body, and then ghosts started speaking through me. What’s happening here scares me, but we’ve got no other way out. We need to save Martha. The life is leaving her body, but how can we find her soul and bring it back from the astral plane? Right now we’ve got absolutely no idea. What kind of ritual was Martha performing? What was she looking for on the astral plane, what happened there, and who could be powerful enough to snap the thread connecting her body to her soul? Right now all we’ve got are questions.

・if one of my cases, even the most dangerous one,:英語ビギナーからしたらとんでもなく訳しづらい文でしたが…。if one of my cases,

I hope we can find some answers.

Chapter1:The ghosts are the only witnesses to what happened during the ritual when Martha was hurt. Find a way to materialise the ghosts and get them to talk.
MISSION:Get the ghosts talking in the Room of Fate.

《 Manifestation Magic(顕現する魔術)》

During the ritual, Martha summoned five ghosts that are still floating around the Room of Fate. They must have the answers to at least some of our questions. But how can we reveal and question them? Martha said that ghosts are connected to items from their previous lives. These items will help us force them to materialise and become visible. And as soon as I can see them, I’ll be able to get the answers we need. Remember how we heard five different voices coming from Martha’s lips? One of them was a child. The little boy was complaining about losing a shuttlecock in a tree and being unable to find it. Go look for the Shuttlecock!

Great job, pal! As soon as we found the Shuttlecock, the little boy’s ghost appeared in a dark corner. My guess was correct – items from the past will allow us to force the ghosts who witnessed the events to materialise in the Room of Fate. We’re on the right track!

We’re on the right track!:最終文です。直訳すると「俺たちは正しい走路上にいる」。

I’ve seen many things in the City of Shadows, mon ami, but even after all of them, the things that are happening in the Room of Fate still make me tremble in fear! When I entered the room, Martha’s crystal ball flashed with an eerie blue light. When gazing at it, I suddenly felt like a moth to a flame. It/span seemed as though I could hear some kind of otherworldly voice – it whispered to me of the sweetness and beauty of death. It enticed me to be done with life and join the spectral host. At that moment the knife on the table moved by itself, drawing closer to me before resting in my hand… It’s a good thing the Detective came into the room when he did and drew me back from the edge of oblivion! Be careful, mon ami – all of the spirits that currently inhabit the Room of Fate are far from harmless.

Thanks for the warning.

《 The Defender of Order(秩序の番人)》

The Detective’s guess was correct – items from the past will allow us to force the ghosts that Martha summoned during the dangerous ritual to materialise. However, the little boy’s ghost remains completely silent. Maybe we can learn something once we’ve forced all five ghosts to materialise. Who’s next? Mein freund, I heard yet another ghost speaking with Martha’s lips. It sounded like it was giving a report – the spirit said that it  had successfully arrested a robber despite his resistance. It must be the ghost of a police officer. Could you find his item?  I think we need a revolver or a police badge. Please hurry – Martha’s pulse is so weak!

You’re an excellent detective, mein freund. This is an old Sheriff‘s Badge. I’ve heard that Martha is from a small town in Massachusetts. Oh mein Gott! The ghost of a sheriff has appeared in the room. Oh well, this isn’t my first encounter with a ghost. Greetings, Herr Sherriff! Hmm, it seems he does not wish to speak to me.

・Oh mein Gott!=Oh my God!

《 The Doctor’s Appearance(医者の霊)》

I tried to get Martha to regain consciousness, but she just cried out in a deep bass voice. She demanded that I drink castor oil and threatened to put leeches on me! Yuck! Disgusting! If you ask me, one of the ghosts hovering above Martha’s body is a doctor. We need to find something that belonged to him, then the doctor will appear in this room. He probably knows what has befallen Martha. We can’t waste any time. According to Isabelle, Martha could die if she spends too long in this condition.

Nicely done! That’s a lovely glass bottle. Hey, this is Laudanum, an opium based drug! I’ve read about it. It’s a controlled substance now, but they used to use it to treat everything under the sun. Look, in the armchair – it’s the doctor himself in the flesh! Well, ghostly flesh… Um, hello there, sir! I’m afraid he isn’t responding. Let’s see what happens when we’ve got all five ghosts together.

《 The Ghostly Sorceress(魔女の霊)》

My dear friend, we urgently need to talk to the ghosts that have possessed Martha! Three of the five ghosts are here, but none of them have responded to us. We’ve managed to confirm that ghosts are summoned by items they once possessed. One of the spirits used Martha’s mouth to give a proper dressing down to some students, then began lecturing about spiritism. I think she’s a teacher from a magic school. Find an item that might have belonged to her. Perhaps an old charmed item of some kind?

Good heavens, what just happened! I heard a strange scraping sound, as though someone were scratching glass with a knife! I was so frightened! I started looking around and saw that the mirror was fogging up on the other side, as though someone had breathed on it. There was something written in the foggy glass. It said, “Help me!” Someone must have drawn it with their finger from inside the mirror. I only saw the message for a second before it disappeared and someone’s shadow flashed across the mirror. Could it have been Martha asking us for help?

・Good Heavens:「

Anything can happen…

《 The Missing Girl(消えてしまった少女)》

I’m certain that the ghosts surrounding Martha know what happened to her. Now we just need to force the last one to materialise. I heard Martha pleading in a Texas drawl for someone to find her kidnapped daughter. That woman probably had a picture of the girl. Find the portrait of the missing girl. It will help us summon her mother’s ghost.

Find the Child's Portrait Cameo. Explore the Room of Fate.

A cameo with a girl’s portrait? That’s just what we need. Look, the ghost of the inconsolable mother has appeared in the room. Though I’m not surprised that she doesn’t want to speak to us. Now all the ghosts are here, let’s hurry up and tell Isabelle. If anyone can get them to talk, it’s her. Martha is very weak. I don’t want her to die or end up trapped between worlds. I have no idea what this is…

Have you noticed how old the items we used to force the ghosts to materialise are? They’re all from the early 20th century… which, as far as I can tell, is when Martha was a child and a young woman. I think that all of the ghosts that have possessed the medium are from her past. Chances are, they all knew Martha when they were alive. A little boy she was friends with, the sheriff from her hometown, the family doctor, her school teacher, a woman whose missing daughter Martha found… But why did our medium need to summon them? And what does this have to do with the ritual that almost killed her? Hopefully Isabelle can find a way to get these ghosts to talk. Then I’ll be able to clear this all up, believe you me!

・believe you me!:私を信じて! 本来は You believe me!

I hope we can soon learn the answers.

《 A Biased Interrogation(先入観にまみれた尋問)》

Thanks to you, we’ve forced all five ghosts to materialise. They’re all witnesses to what happened in the Room of Fate when Martha’s soul got stuck on the astral plane. However, the ghosts still aren’t talking. It’s as though they’re afflicted with a curse of silence. How can we get them to talk? This isn’t my area of expertise, but I think I can break the curse of silence based on Martha’s notes. Bring me a few City artifacts, and we’ll see if I can get the ghosts to start talking.

・be afflicted with:~に苦しむ、悩む

Hopefully the spirits will tell me what I need to know what kind of ritual Martha was performing and what she was looking for in the depths of the astral plane. Martha Myth’s Diary
“There is a secret hidden in my past. There is an entire decade between my childhood and my youth of which I can remember absolutely nothing, as though someone has erased my memory. Dull silhouettes of the past float through my dreams, but as soon as I open my eyes, they slip away from my memory. I know that I have forgotten something very important. Something terrible happened when I was a child. And someone intentionally forced me to forget about it. Day after day I’ve searched for a clue that might help me remember what happened. Archives, libraries, newspaper clippings… and every time I get close to something important, it’s all been in vain. It’s as though some mysterious force is always one step ahead of me. It erases facts from reality, and even from my dreams. But what kind of force is it? What mystery lies hidden in my past? Why was I made to forget it, and why was it so important that I don’t remember anything? I will get my memories back. No matter who tries to get in my way, I will not stop.”

Martha Myth’s Diary
“After years of fruitless searching, I’ve come to realise that there is nothing in our world that can return my lost memories to me. So I have turned my gaze to the spirit world. While travelling on the astral plane, I discovered an amazing quality of the supernatural realm: everything that happens in our reality leaves a trace in other dimensions. I realised that, if I dive deep enough into the astral plane, I will reach layers where the images of events and things from my past are still visible. If I can force these items to materialise, my memory will return. I have searched the depths of the astral plane for many years, but only today did I feel a weak response – the shadow of an item from my lost youth. I discovered a layer containing my memories, still untouched by the hands of destruction! However, in order to recover my memories, I will have to dive so deep into the spirit realm that the connection between my soul and my body might be severed. I am about to prepare for the necessary ritual.”

Not bad, buddy! Apparently Martha has disappeared into her own memories! If these letters are to be believed, something extremely important happened in Martha’s past, but something or someone made her forget about it. That’s why our medium decided to perform this dangerous ritual – she wanted to learn the secret of her past and get her lost memories back. I heard Isabelle questioning the ghosts we summoned. They told her about what happened in the Room of Fate. At first, the ritual was going well. The fiery outlines of items – the very items Martha had dug into the astral dimensions to obtain – had already begun to materialise on the table before her… but then something happened that terrified even the ghosts! Flashes, bolts of lightning, flying objects, and eerie sounds filled the Room of Fate. And when it all grew quiet, Martha’s body was like a doll. That’s how her soul became lost on the astral plane!

How can we get her back?

Chapter2:The ghosts said that Martha was conducting a very dangerous experiment so that she could get back the memory of a lost decade from her life. MISSION:Find the key to Martha’s Childhood.

Look, the outlines of three items that look like keys are burnt into the table, as well as something resembling a small box. As far as I can tell, Martha was able to find some very important items from her past, but her mysterious enemy prevented her from bringing them back to our world. Look, the ghosts are fading away, and words are appearing on the mirror!

What could it be?

“The keys that open the door to the past will show the soul how to return from the astral depths and regain its future.
Each key opens one door.
The first leads to the happy childhood of a little girl who was gifted in ways others were not. The second, winged key leads to the trying teenage years of a young witch who now lives among her equals.
The third key bears the lily of queens and leads to the glamorous life of a woman whose fame spanned the globe.”

《 Lucky Toy(幸運のおもちゃ)》

Ghosts love to speak in riddles, but in this case everything is extremely clear. Martha was searching the astral plane for items connected to key events from her past- the same events that she wanted so desperately to remember. If we can manage to complete the ritual and make those items materialise, they’ll act as a beacon to Martha’s lost soul and show her the way back to her dying body. The first key is connected to Martha’s childhood. Isabelle says that items from Martha’s childhood will help us force the key to materialise. Will you help us find them? I suggest starting with some kind of old-fashioned toy.

《 Privilege of a Little Medium(気持ちの悪い肝油)》

We need to summon the keys from Martha’s past and get her back right away! What other items from Martha’s childhood could be in the Room of Fate? Do you remember the doctor’s ghost Martha summoned? He threatened to put leeches on me. If he treated Martha when she was little, she might still have a few bottles of medicine, right? Look for some kind of bottle of medicine.

Listen, buddy, I was digging around in the Room of Fate looking for useful clues for this case when I stumbled across this. It’s a fragment of an old newspaper article. Some journalist was investigating strange occurrences in a small town in Massachusetts. Martha was born to a family of mediums, but apparently as a child she was still unable to control her supernatural gift. She was careless and many witnessed her manifestations. I hope this hack didn’t cause Martha any problems… like her neighbours deciding to start a witch hunt! Here you go, read it for yourself. And if you find any other fragments from this article, let me know, okay? The ghosts must have shredded the paper and scattered pieces all over the room when they messed up the Room of Fate.

Inexplicable Occurrences Witnessed in Our Town!
“…people have been whispering about strange phenomena on Blackwitch Street. At first no one paid the power outages any mind – the townspeople, who still have not gotten used to replacing their kerosene lamps with electric ones, are distrustful of electricity and attribute any difficulties to the unreliability of the new technology. However, when St. Elmo’s Fire began to be observed on the weathervane on 7 Blackwitch St, rumours started to spread among the neighbourhood. And when long-dead relatives began to appear in family photographs taken at neighbouring homes, the suspicion that some kind of mystical witchcraft was being practiced around 7 Blackwitch St. was intensified.
The family living at 7 Blackwitch St. seems perfectly ordinary at first glance. The father is a staid, respected bank clerk who lives with a caring grandmother, a loving mother, and two charming daughters, Martha and Erin, who are 9 and 12 respectively. However, as soon as we began observing this respectable household, we determined that…”

《 Astral Electricity(霊的な電気)》

My dear friend, the newspaper article found in the Room of Fate describes a weathervane that was on the roof of Martha’s house. That’s just what we need – an item from her childhood. I think I’ve seen it somewhere in the Room of Fate. I remember wondering why Martha would need a weathervane? Well, apparently it was a memento. Find it.

Wonderful! This weathervane must have looked so beautiful when Martha’s gift made it glow with St. Elmo’s Fire… did you know that the flames appear on the sharp points of tall items thanks to an electrical charge in the air around them? Now we have one more item from Martha’s childhood.

“…the girls were playing in the garden when a shuttlecock flew over the fence. The boy next-door was playing badminton and accidentally knocked it into a tall apple tree. The shuttlecock got stuck in the tree, and there was no way for the children to get it back down. The boy was distraught and burst into tears, but Erin raised her hand casually, and, despite the absence of any wind at all, the shuttlecock suddenly flew out of the tree and fell to the ground at his feet.
Another time Erin went into the garden alone. She was swinging on a swing when I overheard her conversing with someone. I listened to her conversation with this invisible being for quite some time. It’s not uncommon for children to have imaginary friends, but how can we explain a twelve-year-old girl calling her imaginary friend “professor” and discussing complex equations with him? Perhaps the girl was actually speaking to the ghost of a recently-deceased professor…”

Oh, you’ve found another fragment of the article! Fascinating… This must be the same little boy whose spirit has now possessed Martha, and that shuttlecock must be the one we were looking for in order to see the boy. I’ve heard that Martha had an older sister, but that’s all. Martha doesn’t really like to talk about herself. I always thought there was some dark mystery concealed here. Maybe this journalist was the reason Martha and her family were forced out of town, and now Martha blames herself? However, all of the members of her family were mediums, and this article suggests that the journalist thought the older sister was the one practicing sorcery, not Martha. How mysterious…

Mon ami, search the Room of Fate for something connected to Martha’s sister. This will be the last item from Martha’s childhood that we need in order to save her. Hurry! The medium’s pulse is growing weaker by the hour.

“…but on the very day I was preparing to pay the esteemed family a visit and have a frank discussion with the girls’ parents, something completely unexpected happened. Another visitor came to 7 Blackwitch St. – Leonardo, a renowned inventor. Leonardo spent no more than a couple of hours there. When he left, he took both sisters with him. Baffled, I tried to follow him and discover where he was taking then, but Leonardo hid so skillfully like he knew he was being watched. Frustrated by his escape, I returned to 7 Blackwitch St. but there was no one there. The girl’s parents had disappeared just as suddenly as their children.
Two years have passed since I left Blackwitch St. I’ve tried to find the mysterious girls many times, but my efforts have been fruitless. Leonardo himself has appeared in public, but the children he took with him seem to have vanished into thin air. Just like their parents…”

This must be the last fragment of the article – the other ghosts ripped the rest into such tiny pieces that I doubt we’ll be able to assemble and read anything else. I’m glad that Martha’s family were able to hide from that nosy journalist and that he never exposed them to the town. But who is this inventor, Leonardo? Where did he take Martha and her sister? It’s just one more mystery… Hopefully when Martha comes back to us she’ll be able to answer our questions, because I’ve got a bunch of them. Come on, let’s go talk to Isabelle. We’re going to need help to summon the key to Martha’s childhood.

Great job! Look – a key has appeared on the table. Wow, it’s so beautiful! It’s made of brass and has old-fashioned swirls and a pink bow on the handle. It really does look like the key to a happy child’s playroom. This is the first of the keys that will show our medium’s lost soul the way home.

Strange… very strange… Leonardo the inventor… Leonardo isn’t an unusual name, but still… That was the name of the scientist whose failed experiment caused the City of Shadows to appear. I was searching the Room of Fate for some information about the mysterious inventor and came across an interesting note. It seems this page was torn from Martha’s childhood diary. Just imagine… read it for yourself.

Martha Myth’s Diary
“Yesterday Leonardo took Erin and I back to his house. He’s got a big house with red windows that glow red at night. Uncle Leonardo is gathering children here, children with unusual powers like me and Erin. There are lots of kids here, and it’s a lot of fun, but I miss my mummy and daddy, and grandma too. I also got a little scared when Uncle Leonardo showed us a strange machine he made.
Uncle Leonardo says this machine will help me discover my gift. He said i’ll have to get in the machine and that it will enhance my abilities. I don’t want to get in the machine. It’s scary. But Leonardo put Erin in it today and she seems okay. I’ll probably have to get in too. I don’t want people to laugh at me and say I’m a scaredy-cat. I’m already nine now, after all. I’m almost grown up.”
August 1909

Have you read it yet, pal? A house with red windows! It’s where Leonardo gathered children with supernatural abilities! Could this be the same House with Red Windows that sometimes appears in the City of Shadows? Maybe it’s just a coincidence. When it comes down to it, Martha was just a kid, and there are plenty of houses with red windows out there. But my gut tells me there’s more to it than that. And I’m not crazy about this Leonardo shoving kids into some kind of machine of his own design! I think he was performing experiments on Martha and her sister in order to enhance their magical abilities. Performing experiments on children… I mean, can you imagine!?

・when it comes down to it:結局、いざというときには、いざとなれば
・I’m not crazy about~:「~にあまり関心がない」「気乗りしない」「夢中になるほどのことではない」というニュアンスですが、文脈的に「子供を突っ込んでてもどうでもいいわ」みたいな感じになっちゃってなんか鬼畜ですよね。

Well, we’ll see.

Chapter3.

HiddenCity open the Diary

Chapter3:The first key allowed us to discover that someone named Leonardo did experiments on Martha and her sister when they were children. Martha’s sister disappeared, and Martha lost the memory of this period of her life. The traces of Martha’s past lead to the School for Young Witches, where Martha studied as a teenager. Find the key to Martha’s Youth.
MISSION:Find the key to Martha’s Youth.

We’ve obtained the first key to the past, and it shed some light on Martha’s childhood. We’ve discovered that Martha had a sister named Erin and that they were both taken by Leonardo, who was researching people with paranormal abilities. We need to keep looking for the other keys to the past, so they can show Martha’s soul the way back. If we’ve correctly interpreted what the ghosts told us, the next key should be to Martha’s adolescence. Hopefully we won’t have any problems with it, since every minute Martha spends outside of her body pulls her further and further away.

《 School Symbol(校章)》

We need to help Isabelle materialise the key to our medium’s adolescence. One of the ghosts Martha summoned was her teacher from the School for Young Witches. That’s obviously where Martha spent her teenage years. That means we need to learn as much about this school as we can and collect items that belonged to Martha when she went there. Every school starts with an insignia. Try to find the insignia of Martha’s magic school.

I know what we need to look for from Martha’s time at the School for Young Witches! She probably had friends there. I had so many friends in college! Mon ami, to get the key to Adolescence that will help us bring Martha’s soul back, we need to find something connected to her time as a student at the School for Young Witches. Our Martha is an expert at reading tarot cards, and she learned this skill at school. Let’s try to find her old cards.

School for Young Witches, New Orleans
Profile
Martha Myth, enrolled September 4th, 1913
“The young woman has high magical potential and is gifted in the fields of hypnotism, spiritism, and prognostication. She is intelligent, exceptionally well-educated for her age, and a very hard worker; but she has serious problems controlling her gift – every third fortune-telling session leads to her cards spontaneously combusting on the table. She even summons spirits leading to the explosion of crystal balls and the appearance of extraneous, often hostile beings. Martha Myth also suffers from memory loss and is unsociable, preferring the company of a snake she calls Uroboros to human interaction. She could be dangerous to herself and those around her, so we recommend blocking her gifts and expelling her from the school.”

《 The Finer Points of Spiritism(降霊術の機微)》

This isn’t the time to get down in the dumps. I’m certain that Martha was not expelled from the school. We need to get her back as soon as possible. In order to do that we need to force the key to her adolescence to materialise using items from her school years. The profile says that Martha was into spiritism. I think we should find something connected to summoning spirits.

Now we just have to find the last item that Martha kept from her school years. The profile says that she was into hypnotism. Try to find something from that field. What could it be? Perhaps a ball on a string?

I can’t believe we actually did it! We now have all five items from Martha’s school years, so I’ll be able to summon the Key to Adolescence from the astral plane. We’re one step closer to saving our medium’s soul. But it’s so amazing to see all of these magical items! Martha’s youth wasn’t exactly perfect, but still… She had teachers who helped her master magic. She was able to interact with her classmates even if they weren’t friends. I don’t know if Martha was happy as a student, but I’d have given a lot to trade places with her. When I was growing up, all I had were the walls of my room.

My dear friend! We’ve finally collected all the items we need in order to get the key to Martha’s adolescence, but something has gone wrong. Splendid! We’ve got the key to Martha’s adolescence! It’s made of gold, decorated with sapphires, and adorned with doves and an aquamarine goblet. It looks incredibly valuable. Darn it, we can’t lose our medium! She’s come to our aid so many times. Some kind of dark force interrupted Martha’s ritual, and now she’s lingering between life and death. Fortunately, thanks to the hints from the ghosts of Martha’s past, we know how to help her. Three keys to three periods of her life will help us bring Martha back from the astral plane. We’ve had to make sense of her past – as a child she was forced to leave her parents and sister, and she almost got tossed out of the School for Young Witches. We’ve got no choice but to dig up things that don’t concern us, but don’t see any other way to bring Martha back. We’ve got the keys to Martha’s childhood and adolescence. Now we just need one more: the last key, the one that will shed light on her adult life.

What happened to Martha next?

We’ve got the keys to Martha’s childhood and youth. Now we just need to get the Medium’s Key. It’s the last key we need to save our Martha. In order to do this, we need to shed some light on her path after graduation. She told me that she worked as a fortune teller for a while. Find items that can tell us about her career in New Orleans.

I’m ready to start looking.

《 Eye-Catching Ad(目を奪われてしまうような広告)》

I’ve been to Paris and there are lots of clairvoyant salons in Montmartre. They used to write about the best mediums in the papers, and there were even posters and notices about them everywhere. I think Martha also had a salon, and its poster probably occupied a worthy spot on a New Orleans bulletin board. I’m sure that this poster is the first step to getting the third key. Find it, mon ami.

Mon dieu, you did it! Oh, what a colourful, eye-catching, professional-looking poster Martha had! “Martha Myth, fortune teller. 《 The Experiments Continue(実験の続き)》

It isn’t hard to guess which items of Martha’s are connected to her work as a fortune teller in New Orleans. Every self-respecting fortune teller has a Ouija board. The most important part of the board is the triangle. The spirits move it along words burnt into the wood, thereby connecting them to the world of the living. Find Martha’s Ouija Board Triangle.

・connect A to B:AとBと接続する、結びつける
これを、planchet(プランシェット)といいます。

Wonderful! You’ve found the Ouija Board Triangle. By the way, this is an interesting model. I’ve never seen one like it before. Look, instead of a magnifying glass, there’s a burnished sapphire set in it. This is a very interesting idea of Martha’s to increase magical flow… Martha had mastered séance rituals when she made this. Only the most advanced mediums are capable of that. We’re learning so much about her!

《 Entering a Trance(夢うつつ状態)》

My friend! I’ve got an idea about something the magnificent Martha might have used during the dawn of her career in New Orleans. I think you should look for an incense holder or some kind of brass cup for incense and other herbs, yes? Medium’s salons, well… they tend to smell rather odd. They say the scents help them enter their trance.

Yes, yes, that’s exactly what I had in mind. An Incense Holder! Note what a fine piece this is. She obviously spared no expense on it, which means that Martha’s business was booming. The incense holder still stin… er, smells like aromatic resin. Achoo! You don’t have a handkerchief on you, do you? Hopefully this rather fragrant item will help us get Martha back.

I once saw a photograph of Martha on a stage. I noticed her brooch – it was the symbol of her recognition as Martha the Most Powerful. This is a very important part of her past. Martha Myth’s Diary
“I don’t remember. I don’t remember anything that happened in the House with Red Windows. I don’t even know where the cursed building is, yet it was where they took me and my sister! It was where I saw Erin for the last time!
Over the last ten years nothing has helped me get my memories back – not rituals, self-hypnosis, tarot readings… nothing! I’m about to lose my mind trying to find out what they did to me and my sister at the House with Red Windows. Where it is, and what happened to Erin?!
While meditating I found out that there are keys that can lead me to Leonardo’s house. I’ve managed to create two of them based on the remnants of my memories, but the secret of the third and final key belongs to the master: Houdini. I have to get in touch with him! I wrote the master a letter, and he finally answered… I hope Houdini will agree to help me.”

Incredible! So that’s how Martha ended up in the City of Shadows! She found a way to reach the House with Red Windows by using the three keys she created. But the House with Red Windows is our City’s elusive phantom. Many people have seen it, but no one has ever been inside. Did Martha manage to do it in 1925? I’d bet anything these are the very keys we’re trying to get to save Martha right now! Two of them are already in our hands. We have everything we need to force the third key to materialise.

Just a little more effort and I’ll be able to get the Medium’s Key; the third and final key that will bring Martha’s lost soul back from the astral plane. You’ve collected items that describe Martha’s path from a fortune teller in the French Quarters of New Orleans to an international star who was on a first-name basis with the great Houdini. Wonderful! Thanks to you, we now have the Medium’s Key! Look how different it is from the Keys to Childhood and Adolescence – it’s simple, made of bronze, and only has a little insignia on it shaped like a lily. But real magic has no need for fancy details, and… look, Martha is regaining consciousness!

My head is spinning. Am I really back? Thank you for helping me find my way back to the world of the living! I thought I was going to be trapped in dark, timelessness forever… You’ve read my notes, haven’t you? And now you want to know why performed such a dangerous ritual? I’ll tell you my secret: as a child, I spent some time in the House with Red Windows. Yes, the same house that, like a ghost, appears in various parts of the City of Shadows. My sister and I were taken there a long time ago. I remember a man called Leonardo opening the door, my sister and I crossing the threshold, and then… nothing. The next thing I remember is the school in New Orleans, but without Erin. All I have left is a page ripped from a diary I kept as a little girl. I don’t know where my sister is, but I’m afraid something terrible might have happened to her. Please help me complete the ritual and find out if she’s okay! I can’t have peace until I know what happened to Erin!

HiddenCity open the Diary

Chapter5:The three keys you found have brought Martha back from the astral plane. She found evidence of her sister and Leonardo in the City of Shadows, but couldn’t discover what happened to them during childhood. Everything that Martha found out immediately got erased from her consciousness. To protect her memories, Martha created a cache where she placed the memories that were restored during meditation. To protect the cache, the medium split it into several parts and hid them in oblivion. Collect all the parts of the cache and help Martha figure out what actually happened in her past.
MISSION:Collect the Jewellery Box with Martha’s memories.

You won’t believe how many times I’ve tried to learn my sister’s fate! I spent many years looking for a way to return to the House with Red Windows, but even after coming to the City of Shadows I still couldn’t get inside – there’s no way into that house. I still never gave up trying to remember what happened in that fateful House. With each ritual the sensation of deja vu grew stronger, as though my memories were returning, before disappearing by someone’s evil will. I eventually became convinced of this. In order to break the circle, I asked the Collector for help. Together we created a place to store my memories. I hid the memories there after writing them down while in a trance. It looked like a box. Can you see the imprint on my table? It can be opened by three keys – the same three keys I performed this dangerous ritual with. But first need to find that item!

・sensation of deja vu:既視感

How can I find it?

《 Illusionary Figure(錯覚を生み出す形)》

The box in which my memories are stored cannot be found on the astral plane or in the real world. The Collector and I disassembled it into its constituent elements in order to give it greater protection. These elements appear as paradoxical mathematical objects, which you’ll have to find. The box cannot be seen or touched, and yet it still exists. It has the properties of an impossible object. That’s why the first element is an Escher Cube. Find it.

《 Two in One(2

Martha disassembled the box in which her memories were stored into impossible mathematical doodads. I’m no expert when it comes to this stuff, but I’m familiar with the Mobius strip. You know, that thingy that looks like a twisty… strip. Try to find the Mobius Strip, buddy.

《 Expert Recommendation(精通者の助言)》

I heard you’re collecting unbelievable items in order to open a box containing Martha’s memories. Is that true? Try to find a Klein Bottle. Its surface never ends. You can only see it in four-dimensional space, of course, so to the naked eye it just looks like a bottle with two extra openings at the bottom and on the side. Why are you looking at me like that? I just know a lot about bottles, okay!

《 Eternal Connection(永遠のつながり)》

Now we just have to find two more items to get the box containing Martha’s memories about the time she spent in the House with Red Windows. I think one of the items could easily be a symbol of infinity. It looks like a figure eight, but on its side. Could you try to find it?

《 Elegant Perfection(洗練された完璧な品)》

The last item that allowed me to make the box for my memories was a shell. I chose it because nature created the shell on the basis of a perfect logarithmic spiral. Anyone who moves along this spiral will always maintain a constant perspective on the centre of their motion, just as the box contains its contents despite all the passing years.

“I was jealous of Erin ever since I was a little girl. My sister wasn’t just older, she was also more powerful. Erin got all of my grandmother’s attention. She always knew what to say in school, and my parents were constantly telling me to be more like her. Erin this, Erin that! Erin, Erin, Erin!
I loved my sister. It was impossible not to love her, but I also hated her. My envy ate away at me like a worm in a sweet apple. Sometimes I wanted Erin to disappear.
Then Leonardo came. He somehow found out about our gifts and convinced our parents that he would help me and Erin develop our abilities. He took my sister and I to the House with Red Windows and hooked us up to an experimental machine. He said that this gizmo could enhance my magic, and then I’d be able to do everything Erin could do. But something I went wrong during a routine experiment. The machine exploded. Erin was killed, and her gift was transferred to me.

What a mysterious story! Two sisters lived in Massachusetts. The younger sister hated the elder sister and dreamed of getting rid of her. And look how well it all turned out the older sister dies in a strange machine inside the House with Red Windows, that supposedly enhances magical ability. The little sister suddenly gets her sister’s power, the same power she was so jealous of, and loses her memory… Strange. Martha’s note doesn’t even say what caused the explosion. Oh, no, I’m not suggesting anything. But you’ve got to admit that this story sounds… unusual to say the least.

・to say the least:控えめに言って

What nonsense! I don’t believe it!

All these years I suspected that Erin’s disappearance was somehow connected to my magical abilities. It turns out that my own abilities were just a weak echo of Erin’s. This isn’t the best discovery, but learning that my sister is truly dead is much worse. Although knowing that I obtained my powerful gift as a medium because Erin died isn’t easy either. It’s almost as though someone up there heard my childish wishes…
Thank you. You saved me and helped me learn what happened to Erin. Sure, what we learned confirmed my greatest fear, but any knowledge is still better than uncertainty and doubt. I won’t forget that my sister died in the House with Red Windows as a result of Leonardo’s cruel experiments…
I’ll see you later, my friend. Don’t worry about me. I’ve coped with many of fate’s cruel tricks, and I will cope with this one as well. My tears will dry, and what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Leonardo and his cursed machine have confirmed this…

Take care, Martha. I’m here for you.

“Hey, buddy!
I think the results of our latest investigation are relevant to you personally. While searching for Jacob, the friend you came to the City of Shadows with, we determined that our City became special after a machine belonging to a certain Leonardo exploded. All signs point to this Leonardo performing experiments on gifted children. We know for sure that Martha’s sister was killed in his machine. You don’t suppose it could be the same machine, do you? There were a lot of kids, and, God willing, they all went home before the machine blew up
If you ask me, it’s clear that Leonardo is a criminal and he’s linked to your friend in some strange way – judging from the photographs and what the Mistress of the Manor shared; Leonardo and Jacob are identical! I think you were lured to the City of Shadows as part of some evil plot. Be extremely careful.
Leonardo has great power over human consciousness – he was even able to wipe the memory of a medium as powerful as Martha. He also has the ability to move freely between the City and reality. Out of all the residents of the City of Shadows, only Martha has managed to come here of her own volition by way of three magical keys. However, the keys we worked so hard to obtain disappeared the instant Martha used them to open the box containing her memories. It seemed like a cruel joke… or another of Leonardo’s experiments and this time we’re the victims.”

The affair with the Jewellery Box of Memories left behind a taste of grief and ash. Martha’s sister perished in the House of Red Windows during tests in Leonardo’s mysterious machine. Erin’s gift passed on to Martha, and we still need to find out what sort of machine is hidden in the House of Red Windows and what danger it poses to the City of Shadows. Who was Leonardo – a genius or just a madman who experimented on people? Is Martha’s case unique, or were there other children? Questions, questions…

Epilogue. 『

There’s a lot that doesn’t make sense about Erin’s death. For example, I never managed to contact her spirit even though a blood connection maintains an indestructible astral channel between relatives. Therefore, when Erin died, her spirit should’ve remained in my field of view… and yet I lost her! Erin was older than me when the events in the House of Red Windows took place. She might have found out more about Leonardo, and her spirit could tell me this information. Could that be why she died? My poor dear sister! Despite everything, we were very close. I would love the opportunity to speak to her again…

Can your connection to her be restored?

《 Martha’s Past(マーサの過去)》

Unfortunately, I can’t restore the blood connection to the spirit of my dead sister. However, I know of a way to link our souls again. I’ll use the magic of the City of Shadows and create an Amulet of Astral Connection. Are you ready to help me? Bring a few urban artifacts for the ritual.

HiddenCity Case3 Key to the Past the the Amulet of Astral Connection

Outstanding! You’ve helped me create an Amulet of Astral Connection for me and my dead sister Erin. Now our souls can communicate with each other. We have so much to say… I won’t ask my sister about what happened to her in the House of Red Windows, but I’m sure that one day I will learn the circumstances of her death. Not to mention the role Leonardo played in all this.

・Not to mention:

Astral Connection

to be continued…
